Early Years
Welcome to Early Years
We are delighted you are considering Gorse Covert for your child’s first steps in school. In our EYFS (Nursery & Reception), we aim to build confidence, curiosity, and a strong sense of belonging. We believe in learning that is joyful, inclusive and rooted in nature and exploration.
Approach and Curriculum
We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework, enriched by Development Matters, to ensure every child meets their learning goals while being inspired to explore their interests. Children learn through play, exploration, and adult‑led activities, both indoors and outdoors. As the year progresses, our learning becomes gradually more structured in preparation for Year 1.
What Makes Gorse Covert Special?
Forest School & Nature Learning
Regular sessions in our forest area where children explore woodlands, build, discover minibeasts, and engage in sensory, hands‑on experiences.
Vegetable Garden
EYFS children help plant, care for, and harvest vegetables and herbs — learning about growth, responsibility, and healthy eating through real‑life experience.
OPAL Play at Breaks & Lunchtimes
Our exciting outdoor playtimes are packed with imagination and creativity, thanks to our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) approach. Children build dens, create games with loose parts, and develop confidence through risk‑aware play.
Year 6 Buddies
Every Reception child is carefully matched with a Year 6 buddy who supports them as they settle into school. Buddies play together, help at lunchtime, and take part in shared activities across the year — building trust, friendship and a real sense of belonging.
Inclusion & Care for Every Child
Our staff are skilled at adapting learning and routines to meet each child’s individual needs. We value diversity, celebrate difference, and provide a warm, nurturing environment where everyone can thrive.
