Learning to Read
Our aim to for children to develop a love of books and the written word. We achieve this through a rich language environment and teaching a variety of reading strategies.
Our main approach is through synthetic phonics and a daily phonics lesson based on ‘Letters and Sounds’. We also use other approaches such as using pictures as clues and reading on to deduce new vocabulary. We encourage the children to check what they are reading makes sense.
We have a number of reading schemes in school including Oxford Reading Tree, Phonics Bug Club and Song birds. All books are ‘book banded’ so each book in the band is of a similar ability.
